Kolkata: Suvendu Adhikari, a West Bengal BJP MLA, slammed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for accusing the Centre of fomenting "deliberate controversy" over her decision to boycott Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cyclone Yaas review meeting on Friday.

Soon after accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of "vendetta politics," opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari slammed Mamata Banerjee on Saturday, as the debate over a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to assess the damage of Cyclone Yaas raged on.

“There was a review meeting in East Midnapore yesterday following the aerial survey in West Bengal, but CM Mamata Banerjee and the government made the PM wait for 30 minutes. Suvendu Adhikari was reported by news agency ANI as stating, "It was a breach of constitutional integrity and it was disgraceful."

“In a news conference today, the CM stated that she was unable to attend the meeting owing to the presence of opposition figures. Suvendu Adhikari remarked, "She is resorting to falsehoods to gratify her ego since she thinks of herself as not just West Bengal's CM, but the entire country's."

Suvendu, a former leader of the Trinamool Congress, claimed he was called to the review meeting on Friday because he is the leader of the opposition in the Bengal assembly and the MLA for the cyclone-affected Nandigram district.

Banerjee allegedly delayed her event to avoid meeting with PM Modi, according to Adhikari, a former senior assistant to the chief minister. He also stated that the CM misled to the press about earlier commitments in order to participate in "petty and egoistic politics."

“In a news conference today, the CM stated that she was unable to attend the meeting owing to the presence of opposition figures. She's lying to feed her ego because she considers herself not just the chief minister of Bengal, but also of the whole country,” Suvendu remarked.

“Mamata Banerjee questioned why the Leader of the Opposition Party was present at the meeting. Because you lost to me in Nandigram, you may not regard me as an Opposition leader. But I'm at a loss for words since she and the chief secretary attacked the Prime Minister,” he continued.

PM Modi had to wait 15 to 20 minutes for the Chief Minister, according to the BJP MLA. “When she arrived, we all paid her respects. But she was gone in less than 5 minutes after handing over the reports to the PM. Adhikari continued, "The DGP and Chief Secretary have become the CM's puppet."

Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday accused the BJP of creating a deliberate scandal over her meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and disseminating "one-sided" news in the media, amid an intensifying struggle between the Centre and the state over the Cyclone Yaas probe.

The CM said she took permission before leaving a virtual news conference amid a political uproar over her choice to forgo a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the post-cyclone scenario.

“I requested the Prime Minister three times: Sir, may I go with my Chief Secretary for another meeting with your gracious permission? Before departing, I sought authorization from the Prime Minister. However, the Prime Minister's Office insulted me, and tweets were sent out to smear my reputation. They humiliated me by using PMO's one-sided information,” she explained.

PM Modi visited West Bengal on Friday and conducted a review meeting to examine the damage caused by Cyclone Yaas, which Banerjee had missed. However, at Kalaikunda Air Base in West Midnapore, the Chief Minister had a brief meeting with the Prime Minister.

She also gave him a report on the cyclone's devastation and requested a Rs 20,000-crore package for rehabilitation of the worst-affected districts.

Mamata's words at her news conference in Kolkata, when she discussed the criticism she received from Union ministers and BJP leaders for skipping PM Modi's review meeting on the destruction caused by Cyclone Yass, were referred to by the BJP legislator. “It was meant to be between the Prime Minister and the Chief of Staff. "Why were the BJP leaders summoned to the meeting?" she enquired.

She also alleged that opposition politicians were not invited to similar review sessions in Gujarat and Odisha, two states hit hard by Cyclone Yaas in recent days.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee further accused the Centre of engaging in "vendetta politics" by ordering the recall of Bengal Chief Secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay. "Because you (Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Shah) can't accept the BJP's defeat, you've been causing us difficulties from the beginning." What is the chief secretary's fault? "Recalling the chief secretary in the midst of the Covid controversy demonstrates that the Centre was engaged in political revenge," she added.

Suvendu Adhikari chastised Mamata Banerjee in a series of tweets on Friday after she skipped the Prime Minister's review meeting. "Today is a bad day in India's long-standing culture of cooperative federalism,

"The totalitarian tone of Mamata Didi's behaviour with PM demonstrates her lack of regard for constitutional norms. She is engaging in petty politics rather than working with the Prime Minister for the benefit of West Bengal. It's awful that she skipped the meeting "According to the BJP leader.

He pointed out that in the past, chief ministers from opposition parties had collaborated with the Prime Minister during times of crises. To back up his claim, he presented images of PM Modi meeting with politicians like as Pinarayi Vijayan, Naveen Patnaik, Omar Abdullah, and the late J Jayalalithaa."Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already met with various Chief Ministers from non-NDA parties to discuss floods and cyclone conditions. None of these Chief Ministers acted in the manner that Mamata Didi did today. There is a difference between politics and government. Didi is baffled by this "Adhikari said.

Mamata was criticized by a number of Union ministers, including Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, as well as BJP national president JP Nadda, for making PM Modi wait throughout the meeting and then leaving minutes after delivering him a report on the impact of Cyclone Yaas' destruction. Mamata stated that he sought approval from the Prime Minister before departing.

Suvendu Adhikari, the West Bengal opposition leader, said on Saturday (May 29) that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the chief secretary had humiliated Prime Minister Narendra Modi by failing to attend a meeting held by him to examine the devastation caused by Cyclone Yaas.

Mamata Banerjee did not attend the meeting, but she did visit the room where Narendra Modi was having it and gave him a report on the cyclone's damages in the state, as well as a Rs 20,000 crore package for rehabilitation of the worst-affected districts.

Alapan Bandyopadhyay, the Chief Secretary, accompanied her. The Centre ordered his transfer to Delhi a few hours after the meeting.

In a virtual news conference, BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari said, "I have no words to criticise the manner the West Bengal chief minister and the chief secretary insulted the prime minister."

Adhikari said that Banerjee questioned his attendance at the meeting on Friday at the Kalaikunda air base in Paschim Medinipur district, but that he was invited as the leader of the opposition in the state house and MLA of cyclone-affected Nandigram.

"By her attitude, she is attempting to demonstrate her arrogance and petty politics," he added.

Mamata Banerjee claims that opposition politicians were not called to similar review sessions in Gujarat and Odisha, two states that have been been hit by cyclones in recent days.
