The trial run of the Mumbai Metro 2A and Mumbai Metro 7 corridors, which run along the Link Road and Western Express Highway in Mumbai's western suburbs, was flag off by Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday.


In the presence of CM Thackeray, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, and Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat, a trial run of the Metro line between Dahanukarwadi and Aarey stations was conducted.


CM Thackeray, on the other hand, has voiced alarm over the high vehicular traffic in Mumbai and warned that if the scenario persists, the lockdown-like limits will be tightened.


This is a significant milestone for the city, which is now serviced by a single 11.4-kilometer east-west Mumbai Metro One line, which opened in June 2014 and connects Versova, Andheri, and Ghatkopar.

Excited onlookers yelled and screamed when they suddenly saw the sleek new rakes moving at regulated speeds on the roads below in the north-western suburbs, and many began snapping images or videos from their balconies or roofs, which went viral on social media.


According to an official, the first phase would encompass 9 stations for both lines, spanning a distance of 10.5 kilometres (Line 2A) and 9.2 km (Line 7), and the remaining portions will be operational in the second phase.

Both lines would reduce travel time from 75-90 minutes to just 25 minutes and are estimated to attract a daily ridership of over 600,000 in a decade, in addition to helping to relieve traffic congestion.


According to the official, more than 93 percent of the civil works on both Metro lines have been done, and other system and station construction is now in full gear to get them ready for the first commuters by September in the first phase launch.


Pawar said that the Maha Vikas Aghadi administration is working quickly, citing the construction of a 30-kilometer asphalt road in Khatau, Satara, in only 24 hours, a feat recognised by the Limca Book of Records, and the completion of an entire cement road in Mumbai in just 12 hours throughout the night.


Union Minister Ramdas Athawale vowed to assist in bringing the state's development and other concerns to the attention of the federal government.


State ministers Balasaheb Thorat, Eknath Shinde, Nawab Malik, Aditya Thackeray, Aslam Sheikh, Subhash Desai, Prajakt Tanpure, MPs and MLAs, MMRDA Commissioner R.A. Rajeev, and other key officials were also in attendance.

Former Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who was present at the occasion along with other ministers, was praised for his efforts, stating he lay the basis for Mumbai's infrastructure upgrade.

MMRDA Commissioner RA Rajeev stated, "This route, which is slated to open for commercial operations by October, is estimated to cut traffic on the Western Express Highway by 25%." By October, the corridor will be available to commercial traffic.

According to an official announcement, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) started testing on the yellow line 2A and red line 7 on Monday, where oscillation experiments of a prototype 6-car train would be undertaken at various speeds.


Both lines will be commissioned in two sections, with the first 20 km from Charkop depot/Dahanukarwadi to Aarey to be completed by September 2021 and the remaining line by January 2022.


The subsystems and equipment will be evaluated under dynamic situations, according to the announcement, which also stated that integration with signalling, telecom, and platform screen doors, as well as other safety checks, would be conducted.


The government approved the Mumbai Metro lines 2A and 7 on October 6, 2015, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted the bhoomipujan on October 11, 2015.


The project will assist in reducing traffic congestion.


The project would assist relieve traffic congestion on one of the busiest roads, which runs from Andheri to Dahisar on the Western Express Highway.

On the Bhiwandi-Kalyan road, Thackeray also electronically inaugurated one arm of the Rajnoli flyover and the Durgadi flyover. Thackeray also conducted bhoomipujan of the elevated road and vehicular underpass that connects the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport's Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2).


These two projects aim to enhance traffic flow along the Western Express Highway's entry/exit points leading to the Mumbai airport.
